Vitamins are nutrients required in trace amounts by an organism for its healthy growth and must be obtained from the diet. As the level of vitamins present in a food may vary from nanograms to milligrams, labelling these vitamins in a matrix like infant formula is a mandatory requirement by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA). The diversity in the chemical nature of vitamins made concurrent extraction and analysis of all vitamins challenging. Food labels are a legal requirement for many reasons, helping consumers make informed choices.
